BPS Cheder

Welcome to BPS Cheder, the school for 4 - 16 years old's at Birmingham Progressive Synagogue. We provide a wide curriculum that supports our student’s development in Jewish Studies and Hebrew.

Although BPS Cheder aims to prepare your child/ren for Bnei Mitzvah and adult Jewish life, it is also important to us that they have the opportunity to grow as individuals, become a valued member of the community and form life long friendships. This is why we aim to include enrichment opportunities, trips and family days throughout the year.

Cheder for students aged 6-16 starts promptly at 9:45 am and finishes after Kiddush at 12:30 pm weekly.

Cheder for students aged 4-6 years starts promptly at 10:55 am and finishes after Kiddush at 12:30 pm monthly.

During teaching sessions students are given the opportunity to participate in Jewish Studies and Hebrew as well as creative activities such as Art, Crafts, Cooking and Life Skills.

During Hebrew lessons, children will be grouped according to ability rather than age. This means that each child is given the best opportunity to develop their language skills as an individual.

Topic lessons will be taught according to age due to the maturity needed to address certain topics. We feel it is necessary to expose children to our full Jewish history including topics such as the Holocaust, but understand that these topics need to be treated with respect and sensitivity.

Enrichment lessons will encourage children to explore their hobbies and interests while building their social and independence skills, topics will be on rotation each term so children have the opportunity to experience different areas.

We look forward to welcoming students back from last year and meeting new students who join us this year!
