Welcome Here! Project funds for BPS

Welcome Here logo

Welcome Here! is our year-long project through 2024, with funding to welcome asylum seekers into our Jewish community alongside friends of all faiths and none. The project is inspired by Jewish ethics of welcoming the stranger, and by our synagogue members, past and present, who came as refugees from Nazi Germany and have contributed so much to our community.

In early autumn 2023, BPS Tikkun Olam Social Action Group applied for Sanctuary Grant funding from the Home Office, allocated by Birmingham City Council. It was a very competitive funding bid and we were proud and delighted that our application was successful, with part of the funding going towards BPS funds to cover all our costs.

We learned in November that our application had been successful, and so we are delivering the project under changed circumstances post 7th October. We continue to be extremely mindful of security concerns to keep our community safe, and are working closely with CST and BPS security team, who are supportive of the project.

Welcome Here! events will be working with asylum seekers living in hotels in Birmingham. The project builds on our past events inviting asylum seekers, recognised and funded by Near Neighbours, United Reformed Church, Council of Christians and Jews and City of Sanctuary.

Our events so far (Tu B’Shvat tree planting and interfaith Shabbat Iftar) have received national recognition, with media coverage in the Times (below) and on Radio 4 – listen here https://youtu.be/DfjfqJPWYdQ – and in the Jewish Chronicle too. And BPS was awarded a national interfaith Mitzvah Day award for Welcome Here!

Welcome Here! Interfaith Tu B'Shvat

Our first Welcome Here! event was a wonderful interfaith tree-planting for Tu B'Shvat. About 80 people attended, including about 40 asylum seekers. Soon everyone was soon digging and planting 10 fruit trees to form a little community orchard at Calthorpe Park in Balsall Heath, along with partners Fruit and Nut Village, Nisa Nashim West Midlands and Travellers Tree CIC

Refugee Week Shabbat: 'Felt like home'

Unprompted, a refugee child stuck this happy drawing on the wall at our Refugee Week Shabbat, on 17th June 23. BPS marked Refugee Week by welcoming interfaith visitors, refugees and asylum seekers to share our Shabbat service, kiddush and lunch.

Rabbi Shoshana's last service

We loved having Rabbi Shoshana Kaminsky (centre, in blue top) with us for a three-month rabbi-swap in spring 2023, while Rabbi Margaret Jacobi was at her synagogue in Adelaide.

Communal Seder 5783

Our annual communal seder has been building back since the pandemic. This year 60 people joined a lively event, bringing delicious Pesach dishes to share. Thanks to Eve and her team of helpers who worked so hard to create such an enjoyable and memorable evening.

Purim

Rabbi Shoshana treated us to a wonderfully lively and rowdy retelling of the Purim story, in her first week in Birmingham. Lots of home-made greggers, crowns, and a feast to share!

It's become a tradition - for all ages! Why not try it at home too - from the washing line?
